Illustrated Dracula

The Illustrated Dracula

Few tales have not only endured the centuries, but spawned countless replications, as Bram Stoker's Dracula. The source of the archetype for the modern vampire myth. Perhaps typifying the ambience of Gothic Horror, the novel was published in 1897. While citing everything from news clippings and a nightmare as the original inspiration for the novel - it is believed Stoker was influenced by a correspondence and meeting with Arminius VambČry. VambČry was a well known Hungarian adventurer and folklore historian of the time; he had documented the eastern european tales the nosferatu (Slavonic for Vampire) and the mythology and history surrounding Vlad Tepes (the noble known as Dracula or "Son of the Dragon").

Dracula's literary form was common to Victoriana. Letters, news clippings and diary entries which seem fractured, all fall together to create a cohesive story. In each fragmented piece of text, the dark count's presence permeates - becoming a primal theme as much as an active character.

This single tale has spawned hundreds of spin off or imitation movies, books, and comics. But it rarely is given a new treatment. Recently Penguin Publishing has brought us The Illustrated Dracula.

Taking the original text, Jae Lee places his hallmark gothic comic art and black and white drawings through out the book. The moody images help to draw out the sense of majesty, decadence, and mystery inherent in not only Dracula, but the age of Victoria.

Jae Lee made his mark with his work on Namor the Sub-Mariner, Inhumans, and Hellshock. He has also shown his versatility on the comics, Fantastic Four, Witchblade, Captain America and many others. Jae Lee holds the distinction of being the youngest artist to ever work for a major comic book company (Marvel). He is also currently scheduled to work on a Marvel adaptation of Stephen King's Dark Tower macabre fantasy setting.

Jae Lee's Dracula If you are an enthusiast of Jae Lee's comic illustrations, the original Dracula or vampires in general, then you will most certainly want to check out Jae Lee's Illustrated Dracula.
